Farrah’s First Steps: Learning to Trust After a Life in the Shadows
📍 Michigan | 🎂 4 years old | ⚖️ 79 lbs
We just heard she is doing better and even goes to the door now when she wants to go outside — a huge step for a girl who once felt safest tucked away indoors. With continued love and encouragement, we know Farrah’s confidence will only keep growing.
Meet Farrah — a 4-year-old Bernese Mountain Dog rescued from life as an Amish mill mama. Now safe in a foster home in St. Joseph, MI, she’s beginning her journey toward healing, trust, and learning what it means to be part of a family.
For most of her life, Farrah lived confined in a corner of a large shower stall. Understandably, she’s cautious and reserved, but there’s no mistaking her gentle heart. While she’s only been in foster care for two weeks, her foster mom Jill sees clear signs that Farrah wants to trust — she’s just not quite there yet.
Here’s what we know so far:
🐾 Farrah is incredibly gentle and calm — she’s never shown fear or aggression.
🐾 She coexists peacefully with the resident Golden Retriever, though she’s not yet ready to play.
🐾 She’s been good with older kids (12+) and is happy to accept soft pets.
🐾 She prefers being inside and doesn’t yet feel safe outdoors.
🐾 Though not tested with cats, her demeanor suggests she’d do well with them.
🐾 She’s recently been spayed, is on an appetite stimulant, and beginning to feel physically stronger.
Farrah’s ideal home will be quiet and patient, with adopters who understand that love, for her, is a slow process. Another calm dog may help her gain confidence, though she’d likely be fine as the only dog as well. Her ears perk up at new sounds, and there’s a light in her eyes that hints at the sweet, playful spirit just waiting to emerge.
She may not be seeking attention just yet — but she’s watching, listening, learning. And she’s so close. With a little time, gentle encouragement, and lots of love, Farrah will blossom into the companion she was always meant to be.
