Adopt: Chela

A Berner Finding Her Shine One Day at a Time 🐾

📍 Elkhart, Indiana | 🎂 5 years old | ⚖️ 72 lbs

A month ago Chela didn't know what grass felt like. She had never been on a walk, never played with a toy, never experienced what it means to be someone's cherished girl. Now she does hot laps in the yard every morning, crosses her paws elegantly when she lies down, and lights up the moment her foster mom walks through the door. She is becoming a Berner — and it is an absolute joy to watch.

Chela is an affectionate, easygoing girl who walks beautifully on leash, tolerates baths and teeth brushing without complaint, and sat outside watching Fourth of July fireworks without batting an eye while the other dogs hid inside. She is unbothered by thunderstorms, vacuums, and most of life's surprises — which, for a dog still learning what life even is, is pretty remarkable.

She is still working on her potty training and improving every single day — a consistent schedule and the influence of her foster siblings have made a huge difference. She eats separately from other dogs for now as she continues building comfort around food, and she can be a little shy around men at first, though she shows no bad behavior — just a quiet preference to hang back and warm up at her own pace.

She loves people deeply, is learning basic commands, and has recently discovered grass, boat rides, chews, and the pure joy of being loved. She is blossoming fast.

Chela would do best in a home that offers:

  • 🏡 A fenced yard preferred — she's not a bolter but loves to explore as her confidence grows

  • 🐾 Other calm dogs welcome — she thrives with canine companions and learns from them

  • 👶 Older children and teenagers welcome — toddlers and babies unknown

  • 🧘 Patient adopters willing to continue her potty training routine with consistency

  • 👨 A gentle approach from men — she warms up, just needs a little time

  • 💛 Someone home often who will let her be the Velcro, grass-loving, hot-lapping girl she is becoming

Chela came into foster care not knowing what it meant to be loved — and in just one month, she has soaked up every bit of it and started shining. The family who gives her the time and patience to keep growing is going to have one extraordinarily devoted girl by their side. 💕

👉 Apply to adopt Chela today and be the home where she truly comes alive.

Chela's foster mom says it best — this girl is a cuddler and an absolutely wonderful pup. Stacy would keep her in a heartbeat, but Chela deserves a person to call completely her own. We have a feeling she won't have to wait long. 💛
